It’s a waste of life to live for nothing!
‘One day a depressed woman jumped off a bridge into a river. Without thinking, a man standing nearby jumped in to save her. But ‘our hero’ suddenly remembered that he couldn’t swim, so he started thrashing around and screaming for help. Hearing his cries, the depressed woman swam to his rescue, hauled him out, administered mouth-to-mouth resuscitation and saved his life. What happened? She found a need greater than her own, and in so doing she found a reason to live.’ This story was told by Bob Gass.
Some people have become tired or frustrated with life because they have refused to come out of their shells and live. Instead of being a burden you can decide to be a blessing in your own little way and gradually blossom to become what you were meant to be. Helen Keller wrote, ‘When one door of happiness closes, another opens; but often we look so long at the closed door that we do not see the one which God has opened for us.’
Life becomes easier if you have a reason for living. You have to find a purpose for living and pour yourself into it. Whatever your level in life, find something worthwhile to do and do it with all diligence. Don’t create room for idleness. Make sure you’re living for something!
No matter how low you have sunk in life, find a reason to be happy again. Get out of that destructive habit; gain control of your mind; elevate your personal standards of quality; acquire new skills and aim for the sky. Do not allow yourself to be defeated. Do not accept your present situation as a permanent condition. Make up your mind to find a need and live to meet it. You can’t afford to die out of frustration, joblessness, hopelessness or depression; rather die to self-interest and materialism in order to live a more worthy life – a life of contribution, service and relevance. Let what you are living for be worth dying for! Martin Luther King Jr. said, ‘If a man hasn’t discovered something that he will die for, he isn’t fit to live.”
Look forward to everyday with faith and hope. Make your contribution to life no matter how small and make the world a better place for others to live in. Be an example others can look up to of living life with passion.
Lesson: Life is meaningless when there is nothing to live for. There is always something to live for! Find a need greater than yours and have a reason to live!
